Doug’s passion for computers began early in life, and it quickly became clear that they would be central to his career. Starting in graphic design, Doug collaborated with small businesses to create logos, marketing materials, and catalogs. As the web emerged, his focus shifted from print to web design and development, where he discovered his love for coding – a passion that soon became his primary focus.
Early in his career, Doug worked with small businesses and startups, honing his skills and launching successful websites. His growing success led to a position as a software development consultant at the U.S. Department of State. There, he built internal applications to support various organizational needs. As he gained more experience, Doug took on leadership roles and eventually led the development of a large-scale content management system deployed across U.S. embassies, facilitating the dissemination of information between the U.S. government and foreign governments.
After six years of consulting at the Department of State, Doug transitioned to commercial consulting, working through agencies on large software projects. He later held several full-time positions, including building content management systems for Time Inc.’s magazine websites and multiple iterations of HBO’s streaming platform. During this time, Doug also leveraged his technology skills for personal use, creating a tool to determine when to leave his house to catch a train. That idea led to the creation of NextStop NYC Subway for iPhone. Released in 2010, it was one of the first apps to provide subway arrival times and quickly gained popularity.
Over more than a decade at HBO, Doug was instrumental in the development of the HBO GO, HBO Now, and HBO Max streaming services. In addition to software development, he gained extensive experience in large-scale product development, creating systems capable of handling extremely high traffic, as well as building and managing teams. Rising to Director of Software Engineering, Doug led an organization of more than 40 people and oversaw systems responsible for processing millions of dollars in payments daily.
After leaving HBO, Doug turned his attention to helping businesses work more efficiently by using tools that simplify processes and save time. He shares that expertise through his YouTube channel, where he provides examples of how these tools can reduce costs and boost productivity. In addition to his channel, he offers personalized, hands-on assistance to businesses, helping them research, select, and implement these solutions effectively. Alongside this work, Doug pursues his passion project: Caddieapp, a golf app for the Apple Watch and iPhone powered by OpenStreetMap.
Outside of work, Doug enjoys outdoor activities, especially golf, and skiing. He runs a local golf group to help both himself and others play more often, explore more courses, and enjoy the outdoors. He also enjoys teaching skiing, which allows him to share his love of the sport with others. He lives with his family in the Rochester, NY, area.
